Morris Huntley comes across the notes of George Gammel which infers the existence of the elder god Cthulhu. Morris is a skeptic towards other religions that is not protestant. he recieves a call from the Queensland Government for him to do work in within the Australian Outback to convert the local indigenous population (during his journey he experiences weird dreams and encounters)
When he gets to the town many of the locals are disturbed by what they say is a monster in a cave a few miles from the town which none of them have gone to. Yaran who has not had these dreams believes the creature is the rainbow serpent. for Morris huntley it is a challenge to convert the local populace put the town back the way it was
After experiencing the dangers of the outback the group finally make it to the cave and find the carcass of a dead serpent creature within the water. Morris observes it as either an odd rock formation or a creature that has long since been dead (though his faith is challenged to a degree)
They all begin walking back with the evidence of the creature being dead. However when they return to the town it has been reduced to bloodshed with a survivors including Maria and Max who are executed when the townsfolk see the group has returned.
Grief stricken Morris attempts to get away during the to leave Yaran and Nathan to their own devices.
in the epilogue of the book it is revealed that Morris Grief stricken killed himself. Yaran and Nathan were able to hold their own against the town however the aftermath of the massacre are arrested by the police. they both commit suicide in the cell but Yaran had begun writing something however he was illiterate and the writing was viewed as gibberish made by an insane aboriginal.
however, the book continues when a PI in Brisbane decides to investigate and finds examples that the men and women that died during the massacre where under the influence from and Elder God known as YIg. when translating what Yaran had said it is revealed the true story of what had taken place in their cells that night.
it also reveals that Morris did not kill himself because of his families death rather when confronted with the forbidden knowledge of the Elder Gods he had killed himself knowing how pathetic and worthless his life was as there is also going to be another me.
