Qualitative Research
based on the collection and analysis of non-numerical data (observations, interviews, videotaping)
it is understanding a social setting or activity viewed from the perspective of the research participant
-
6 General Steps in Qualitative Research
1) Identify Research topics
2) Review of Research
3) Selecting participants
4) Collecting Data
5) Analysing Data
6) Reporting, Evaluating and Evaluating Research
- Ethnography
Step 4: Data can be collected via both quantitative method and qualitative method
- Step 4: Data collected are constantly compared via constant comparison method
- Step 3: Participants usually not more than 20
- Step 1: topics tend to be generally stated and one of the way to narrow down the scale of the study is to narrow the audience to be addressed
Step 4:
- Data is usually collected through observations and interviews (primary data)
- secondary data is the form of artifacts such as journals and books
- researcher is the main source of data
- Step 5: Data Analysis Process is iterative and cyclical.
- data managing (not part of the iterative cycle)
- reading/ memoing
- describing the context and participants
- classifying
- interpreting
- Step 6: Focus on key themes and interpretation, more like a story instead of a formal report.

Measuring Instruments
Uses the term construct.
- construct: abstractions that cannot be observed directly and needed to be operationally defined.
Measuring scales and qualitative variables:
(provide information about qualitative differences)

Qualitative Research uses inductive reasoning, where generalizations is developed from a limited number of observations or experiences.
Analysis of data shifts from specific information to broader, more inclusive understandings.
Ethnography: generalization based on description and analysis of all parts of the culture of a community.
