Types of Muscle.
The muscle cell, like the neuron,
is an excitable tissue,
i.e. an AP is generated when it is stimulated
either chemically, electrically or mechanically.
the muscle is a contractile tissue
with a chemically stored energy
which can be transformed into mechanical energy.
There are 3 different types of muscles in the body:
- skeletal muscles,
- cardiac muscles and
- smooth muscles.
cardiac
1.Location:
- Present only in the heart
2.Structure:
- Also has well
developed
cross-striations.
- Functionally
syncytinl in
character.
-
smooth
1.Location:
- Mostly in hollow viscera.
2.Structure:
- Lacks cross-striations, therefore
also called plain muscle.
- They are of 2 types:
a. Single Unit: functionally syncytial.
b. Multi Unit: functionally non-syncytial.
-
skeletal
1.Location:
- Most are attached to the
skeleton and form
'somatic' musculature.
2.Structure:
- Shows well developed
cross striations, thus,
called 'striated'
muscle.
- Non-syncytial i.e. lacks
anatomic and functional
connections between
individual muscle fibers.
