Balanced Reading Program
1. Read Alouds
Materials:
- Teacher selected book
- Theme props/materials
- Any materials you may need to help with introducing background knowledge
- May need sticky notes in book to remind you when to ask certain questions or make predictions
Physical Space:
- Teacher sitting in a chair or stool in front of the students to create a warm and welcoming atmosphere
- Students sitting on the carpet preferably or at their desks/tables
Time/Structure: 10-30 min depending on how long it takes you to introduce background knowledge, your theme and questions asked throughout the book

2. Shared Reading
Materials:
- A teacher selected text the whole class can see ex: chart, big book, smartboard
- Pointer
- Sticky notes to cover up words
- Markers to write on chart
Physical Space:
- Students sitting on the carpet preferably or at their desks/tables
Time/Structure:
- Text should be read multiple times focusing on a different strategy each time
- 10-15 min each reading focusing on only one or two teaching points each read
The goal is to get the students to enjoy the text and introduce different teaching points as you reread
3. Guided Reading
Materials:
- Teacher flip book with prompts
- Teacher selected book for every child
- Recording sheet
- Letter magnets/stamps/white boards/markers/etc depending what grade and skill you are focusing on

Time/Structure:
- Pull different levelled reading groups during Daily 5
- 20 min
- Before, during and after questions and activities
Teacher is scaffolding learning to apply strategies previously taught in read alouds and shared reading to a small group. The goal is for the students to become confident and independent in their reading, applying strategies on their own.
4. Independent Reading
Physical Space:
- On the carpet for teacher mini lesson
- In the classroom library/reading corner
- At their desk/table
- Taking floor mats to a quiet space in the classroom
Time/Structure:
- 30-40 min
- Three stages: before (select a reading strategy for them to practice), during and after (did the strategy work for you?)
- Student may read on their own, in pairs, readers theatre and literature circles
The final instructional approach in the balanced reading program. Teacher provides minimal support as students use strategies learned from read alouds, shared reading and guided reading.
Materials:
- A book, pointer, sticky notes, marker, etc for the teacher to do mini lesson
- Books the students have selected to read during
- Can use websites like Raz-Kids
A literacy rich environment to support the balanced reading program should include:
- Word wall
- Classroom library and reading corner
- Student developed text in classroom library
- Diverse books in classroom library
- Display of student work
- Co-created print
- Anchor charts that support literacy
- Labels around the room
- Computers/laptops/i-Pads
