Concrete Technology
Aggregate
-
-
Type of aggregate
-
Manufactured aggregate
aggregate of mineral origin resulting from an industrial process involving thermal or other modification.
-
-
Impurities
-
-
Silt/Clay
high water demand, low strength and high shrinkage.
Reactive minerals
Alkali-Silica Reaction (ASR), affects durability of aggregates.
Concrete

Concrete Mixture
Mix Design
Mix Design is the the method to choose the most appropriate proportions of the materials so as to produce a concrete that satisfy all requirements with minimum cost
By Method
-
-
For example, w/c = 0.5; Mix proportion = 1:2:4

Design Mix

-
-
Eg. Cube strength, workability, durability.
Water
Role
-
Physical
-
In fresh concrete, it provides the lubricating element in terms of workability
-
Meaning
-
Water used should be clean and free from deleterious materials which may affect the setting and hardening rates of concrete.
Use of water from underground sources, natural surface water and industrial wastewater is possible but shall be subjected to testing preliminary inspection and testing for harmful contaminants.
Preliminary inspection may be present of oils and detergents, colour not yellowish, suspended solids, odour, pH > 4 etc.

Admixture
Type
Chemical Admixture
A chemical substance which is added in small amounts during or immediately before the mixing stage of concrete production.
Admixture is introduced to concrete to alter or improve the properties of the fresh and hardened concrete.
-
-
Set-Retarders
-
used for large pours such as dam, retaining wall.
suitable for hot weather concreting where hot temperatures can reduce the normal setting and hardening times.
