CRITICAL THINKING - What have I learnt?
What have I found interesting?
Muse Da
I am really impressed by the answers of the warm up quiz. It showed me that things we believe might not be true. It's also interesting to find out that people must have a thing or area that they couldn't be objective with.
Lots of fake news were not revealed or even doubted because of its popularity. It caused people to think that questioning this popular information is awkward.
Quite amazed by the number of barriers that deters people from critical thinking. It's as well interesting to hear about the Milgram Experiment.
WWW: The group presentation part went well. It really helped the group that's presenting understand the topic they are investigating on and improvements could be made through discussion as different opinions were provided. It could be better if
EBI: Some topics were discussed too much and some are not well-explained.

I found the topic about objectivity very interesting.
I learnt that many stories we have heard about such as the moon landing could be fake news. We should not believe everything we see or hear about because there are possibilities that they are not true.
I found the topic about Obedience to Authority very interesting, especially learning about the Milgram experiment
WWW: I enjoyed the group discussions and group activities, it helps me understand things from others point of view. Group activities help us interact with each other.
EBI: Some topics were quite rushed, I would have liked to discuss a few topics in more detail.
Alain Ortiz- we should try to look at things from a different/unbiased perspective
Just because their is a majority of people who believe in something, we shouldn’t always trust it
To have a completely unbiased opinion on something, we have to take into account the different sources that might contradict our existing opinion.
WWW: I learned to keep an objective viewpoint on my beliefs and I should use different sources next time I want to discuss a certain topic.
EBI: It’s a shame we ran out of time as a debate might’ve been quite interesting. (Thank you:)

I thought that the idea of skepticism in being potentially harmful to be interesting
I liked the exercise where we had to determine what is fake news, and what is a made-up fake news article.
It was interesting to see how the obstacles to critical thinking all intertwine with each other
WWW: I liked the discussion on the barriers of critical thinking, and I think the in depth discussion and presentation really helped expand my knowledge.
EBI: I would have liked to have touched more upon whether fake news should be illegal
Louis - I was interested when we talked about something you don't think critically about
I'm still wondering if someone really went to the moon. I'm wondering questions I never asked myself and it's interesting...

I learnt that many things I used to take as fact might not be entirely true
I found the fact that the moon landings could be faked very interesting. I now realise that the world could have been lied to the whole time
I learnt about patternicity and what it is.

-Discussing fake news and examples of uncritical thinking

I am interested in challenging urban myth and getting over bias.
The moon landing debate is a good topic to discuss. Some of the evidences from both sides are pretty solid, some are not quite, some might be manipulated, but none of them can form a 100% conclusion.
Our ability to think critically is affected by these barriers more than I expected, and it is important to be aware of it. Getting information from variety of sources could help a lot.
WWW - interesting topic to discuss, questioning beliefs and points of view, make us reflect on our way of thinking and develop it further
EBI - have more time for each topic
Siddharta L.
Thinking critically all the time is inconvenient as well as time- and effort-consuming
It is possible to be too skeptical (conspiracy theories)
Logical fallacies are common in debates and similar situations. Some seemingly strong arguments may be fallacies
Solutions to barriers to critical thinking often involve increasing one's informations sources
WWW: The lessons were really engaging. I think students had the chance to share ideas and thoughts very regularly, which was very stimulating
EBI: Perhaps slightly more time to be able to explore the course material in more depth.

I found it very interesting to identify and call into question our own biases which we may or may not be very aware of. This really helped me identify how I could be more objective/critical of facts/information.
I found it quite interesting that even though all evidence may seem to support a theory, that does not necessarily prove or disprove it. It may just be coincidental or circumstantially similar. Applying this logic to historical events is especially intriguing as it makes us call into question whether a historical event is the truth or is it just widely accepted as a truth.
I found it very interesting when analysing the Trump supporters arguments and how the video had been edited. Having acknowledged that this video was edited to fit the channel's agenda really changes your perspective. This makes us call into question how the information we receive may be edited or filtered to fit a certain agenda (COVID Stats, current affairs, Protest coverage all are susceptible to deliberate alterations to fit an argument) .
WWW: The discussions that we had were incredibly insightful and well developed. I found that by talking through these scenarios we strengthened our understanding of these concepts and learnt how to put them into practice.
EBI: I think there isn't really anything needed to improve the class. Maybe if we got to form a large scale debate that would be very thought-provoking, and would've served as experience in putting what we've learnt into practice.

Objectivity is more difficult than most believe, our day to day decisions are often less objective than advisable
Not all types of evidence form valid arguments, e.g. logical fallacies
People need to be more aware of their own thoughts and actions, and their consequences, as echo chambers and confirmation bias can be devastating
WWW: drastically changed my understanding of how people can develop radical, extremist opinions.
EBI: I wish that some note taking was encouraged, and that some time was given to do so.
Emily - sometimes arguments that may initially seem strong are not
the different barriers to critical thinking
Yoyo Li - thinking critically can also be unhelpful at times when e.g. there is a time limit so there’s no time to think about the objectivity of a matter.
There are barriers to critical thinking such as obedience to authority which limits our thoughts and opinions.
