Cady's Grade 11 English Class: What is DYSTOPIA?
Pre-Assessment Questionnaire
Completed by all students
Uses simplified language to gauge maximum student understanding
Allows teacher to easily sort students into groups based on their knowledge of the topic, via the answers on the form
Group Divisions (After Questionnaire)
Group of 5 students who have limited knowledge about "dystopia"
Identified 2 or fewer characteristics of a dystopian society
Named one novel or less that has a dystopian setting
Answered "no" to the question about having heard of a dystopia before
Students will be part of "Sorting Skills" group with the teacher
The teacher will provide a basic definition of a dystopia, which is a society where there is a large amount of suffering and bad things happening
Students will be asked if they have ever heard of "The Hunger Games." It is assumed most will, but the trailer of the film will be played for students and the teacher will explain the basic plot
Students discuss with the teacher the elements of the plot that make Panem (the world of
The Hunger Games
) a dystopia
Students will play a game like this that allows them to sort the characteristics into "dystopia" or "normal society"

For students with sensory processing issues, an alternative sorting tool game like Flippity can be used, as the Vortex game has many sounds and flashing lights

Assessment Tracking:
The teacher can gauge the understanding of this group as she will be with them throughout their discussion. The Vortex game is timed, so students can record how long it took them to sort through the 12 characteristics and see if they can beat their time and points (self monitoring). For ongoing knowledge comprehension in this group, the teacher will administer a Google Form check-in at the end of each day (offered to all students but with this group in mind as likely needing extra help). They will read a shorter novel for this unit, which will have weekly content quizzes tailored to their specific novel's content.

For ELL students, the teacher can ask this student if they have any examples of famous films or novels in their language/culture that have this type of theme
Group of about 12 students with some prior knowledge of "dystopia" but room to grow
Students will be divided into six pairs and will watch this clip from "
Black Mirror: Nosedive
" (please note some instances of coarse language)
Students in this group will be slightly more challenged by this example of a "dystopia" as is it not the typical bleak, dark depiction of the theme as seen in
The Hunger Games
,
1984
, etc.
Students (already paired) will think and share with their group members about what makes Lacey's society in "Nosedive" a dystopia
Students in their pairs will choose a book or show that is dystopian, and make a small presentation (1-2 minutes) on a Powerpoint, Prezi, or other presentation tool about why this show or book is dystopian (pointing out characteristics).
Assessment Tracking:
Like all of their peers, students will have Google Form check-ins to show their understanding of each day's lesson, helping the teacher identify if the students need any extra help or if they're on target with learning. Pairs will also be evaluated for how well they identified a dystopian book or film and their short presentation on it. This group, as it is the largest, will also have the chance to watch their fellow group members' presentations and peer-review them. As the unit goes on, the teacher will check understanding with weekly content quizzes based on the novel this group is reading.
Answered "yes" to the question about having heard the word "dystopia" before
Identified 3-4 characteristics of a dystopian society
Named 3+ novels with a dystopian setting
Group of 5 students with the most correct answers/already have a good amount of knowledge about "dystopia"
Answered "yes" to the question about having heard the word "dystopia" before
Identified 5 or 6 (out of 6) characteristics of a dystopian society
Named 4+ novels with a dystopian setting, citing both classic and modern examples (eg.
Brave New World
and
Divergent
, respectively)
Students will be challenged to develop a short invented plot that encompasses at least 5 of the characteristics of a dystopia, using their questionnaire examples as inspiration
Students will then work together to make two short Storyboard/Powtoon presentations (1-2 minutes each) showing how their society would be depicted if it were 1. A dystopia and 2. A utopia (to contrast the two)
Example of a Powtoon created by Tang and Cady in Unit 3
Assessment Tracking:
Like the rest of the class, this group would have regular check-ins via Google Forms, as they may still need assistance and the teacher should still be tracking how they are progressing. There will also be an opportunity for each group member to peer review the other four based on how much they contributed to the short presentation and discussion (since this is a small group of five). This group will read a challenging novel and will be tested with weekly content quizzes just like the others, with the option to turn in chapter summaries at the end of each week before the quiz as well.
