Chapter 8: Development in instrumentation & Measurement
Computer-aided measurement and data transmission
Data can be transmitted over a distant location -from pc -> mini or mainframe computer
Parallel
-Each bit transmitted simultaneously one line being used for each bit
Speed of transmission high
-The cost also high due to increased number of wire
Serial
-Each bits transmitted one by another -Speed of transmission
-The cost are less compare to parallel transmission
Fibre Optic Transducer
Principle
Thin,low-loss glass wire with centre/core region
Core region have slightly higher refractive index compared than cladding
Core diameter is very small= average value is 50nm.
Multimode
Single- mode
Advantage: Low weight and small size hence small sensor size, capability with fibre optic telemetry system, Compatibility with attached to modern electronic circuit
Disadvantage: Fragility, Alignment problems due to small size of optical component, New technology= high cost than normal
Application
Transpacific data cable
Fibre optic pressure transducer
Fibre optic accelerometer
Fibre optic temperature sensor
Fibre optic flow sensor
