Social media and its negative aspects - Coggle Diagram
Social media and its negative aspects
Social Media
Idea: Personal Experiences
Sentence: I ended up deleting social media, specifically Instagram, to try to combat my so called addiction.
Idea: Instant Gratification
Sentence: I think this relates to the way in which new media gives up instant gratification and in particular social media gives up validation.
Additional Idea: Instant gratification can be a factor within lower motivation levels
Idea: Validation
Additional Ideas: A sense of personal self worth can be touched upon
Sentence: I think social media gives people validation and validation is so easy to be received over the phone that people almost rely on social media for this validation other than giving it to them themselves if that makes any sense.
Idea: Personal Experience
Sentence: When I was assigned my roommates studying abroad we were able to get their names and everyone looked up each other's social media and I was almost intimidated by one of my roommates social media accounts expecting them to be almost full of themselves due to how many photos she had posted solely on herself.
2nd Sentence: This allowed me to realize that effect that social media has on the brain and how incorrect it is to judge someone based on their profiles without even getting to know a person first.
3rd Sentence: After I deleted Instagram I have noticed that I spend less time judging people over pictures and less time on my phone in general. I have stopped seeking validation from those types of platforms and I seek validation from myself and myself only now.
New Idea: Self Comparison
Addiction
Sentence: It truly is the first thing that I grab in the morning and while I don’t want it to be I almost see it as a necessity for getting my day started.
Idea/thought: Reliance
Sentence: This topic relates to my life 100% because I fall victim to my “addiction.”
Thought: Admittance
Idea: Actions/steps
Sentence: I think what I have said in this essay really shines a light on the first step that needs to be taken and how realization is a huge factor in the process of getting over an addiction.
Additional Ideas: Realization step could be expanded upon
Judgement
Idea: Judging other women
Sentence: While that is such a terrible thought to have I will admit that I had that thought and it upsets me that that came across my mind to begin with because I would consider myself a feminist and thinking about other women in that light is not something that relates to feminist values.
Idea: Judgement over a screen
Sentence: I think this story really led me to think about all the ways in which we judge before getting to know, since it’s so easy to do on a phone.
Perks of Social Media
Idea: Connectedness
Sentence: I think phones and new media do have its perks and staying connected is definitely important and this essay isn’t to say that “oh you should get rid of everything and fall of the grid,” but in order to combat something of an addiction I think there needs to be a big step back from platforms that cause us to be on our phones all the time.
Pop Up Question: Is being in the loop worth it?
Other People
Idea: Shared Feelings on the topic of social media
Sentence: I think it’s such an important topic because I feel as though a lot of people are in the same boat as me and people are finding themselves spending a dubious amount of time out of their day looking at a screen.
Idea: Shared Wants
Sentence: These aspects I just mentioned should matter to others because at the end of the day I feel as though everyone wants to be that less anxious person who doesn’t need validation from anyone else.
2nd Sentence: I feel as though everyone wants to be able to say it’s not the end of the world if I dropped my phone on subway tracks.
