Taboos in Sarawak tribes
Iban
Whenever, a pregnant woman visits another place, she must return home by the same route.
When an Iban gets sick, he/she will make an offering in a small scale ritual.
A male Iban, who awaits for his wife to give instruction to do heavy work (unless sick) is considered as improper conduct.
An Iban woman devotes most of her time weaving after marriage.
The son or daughter-in-law is prohibited from calling their parents-in-laws by their names.
A girl is being groomed to work attentively soon after she reach puberty
They do not want to be seen rude while walking through crowd.
Bidayuh
People do not call their parents name, they use "excuse me" to get their attention.
The Bidayuh people must share everything they have with their tribe.
When one family member passed away, the action to dance, sing or even wear jewelry is prohibited.
The Bidayuh people have to bow down whenever, they pass through an elderly.
It is prohibited to enter a longhouse when there is a white flag outside of it.
When entering a longhouse, it is encouraged to take off shoes before entering.
Lun Bawang
there is a bird which they call "mengai'" (hummingbird), they believed that this bird can help them during their journey. what they do is they call the bird and if the bird coming from right direction it means a good sign and can continue but if the bird coming from left direction it means its a bad sign and has to go back and continue some other time.
there is one type of tree that lun bawang really scared of that is the "teley" tree, similar to the umbrella tree. they believed that the tree had some power because there is some spiritual at the top of the tree. if the tree branches fell, it cant be taken firewood, if you burn it. you will be in danger, you might die or sick.
they believed in animals and must not laugh at them because it's taboo and can make them in danger if they do so.they made the birds "mengai bird" as their god.
It's believed to be a bad omen to name a newborn baby, Babies will not be named after a deceased family member.
during the marriage or engagement if they come across an animal like fox, snake or something like that they had to stop no matter how beautiful the girls otherwise if they still continue and resist there will be something bad happen to them either the male or woman like die or something like that.
Bugis
Leaving rice on a plate
One of the pamali 'which is believed by most Bugis people is not allowed to leave rice on a plate when finished eating.Many argue, leaving rice is not allowed both traditionally and religiously, because it is tantamount to wasting fortune from God
Butterflies in the house
Well, if there are butterflies that get lost in the house, that means there will be guests who will come in the near future.
Not to sit on a pillow
Considered one of a taboo because it is not polite to do, because the pillow is used for the head and not as a base for sitting buttocks.
Bugis's tribe people prefer that pillows are put on their laps.
The back neck is split in two
The Bugis believe that a person who has a split back neck means that he is stingy. Although sometimes people who have parts in the back of the neck are normal because they are thin.
Midnight ironing
Ironing in the middle of the night is also not allowed by most Bugis people.
Somehow it is forbidden, but some people think that midnight ironing can result in fatal accidents, such as accidentally burning hands due to exposure to the edge of the iron due to lighting conditions at night that are not bright enough.
