The Stonecutter
PLOT
EXPOSITION
Once upon a time there lived a stonecutter. He went every day to a great rock in the side of a big mountain and cut out slabs for gravestones or for houses. A long time he was quite happy and contented, and asked for nothing better than what he had.
RISING ACTION
One day the stonecutter carried a gravestone to the house of a rich man, and saw there all sorts of beautiful things, of which he had never even dreamed. He wished he would be like that. When he went back, he reached the little house where he lived, he stood still with amazement, for instead of his wooden hut was a stately palace.
CLIMAX
He could be whatever he wanted. Everything his heart could desire was his. He wanted to be a prince, the sun and a cloud and he was.
FALLING ACTION
He wanted to be the rock, then he was, and gloried in his power. But one day saw a stonecutter driving tools into his surface. He wanted to be a stonecutter. And a man he was.
RESOLUTION
He toiled again at his trade of stone cutting. But he had learned to be satisfied with it, and did not long to be something or somebody else. He was happy at last.

BELIEF
Japanese people believe in every mountain there is a spirit and in every man there is a spirit of yearning.
This folklore has a decidedly Buddhist message. Buddhist teaches people to be content with the present moment and to not desire. Desire is a fire that forever burns as long as we feed it with more.
