Pre-Assessment
5 students who answered most, including the most difficult, of the pre-assessment questions correctly
Activity 1: Problem Set
These students will complete a problem set, very similar to the one complete by the 12 proficient students, but there will be no multiple choice questions. Instead they will all be short answer or fill in the blank.
Activity 2: Ray Tracing
For this assignment the students will need to make a hard poster or digital poster illustrating ray tracing diagrams not only of concave and convex mirrors, but concave and convex lenses as well.
They will present their posters to the rest of the class. They will be expected to provide a thorough explanation of how they created the ray tracing diagrams for the concave and convex lenses.
12 students who have some knowledge about the topic as shown in their score, but need to develop higher order thinking skills
Activity 1: Problem Set
After a class of lecture and whole class discussion, these students will work in groups of 3 to complete a problem set on transverse and longitudinal waves and the electromagnetic spectrum. The questions will be a mix multiple choice and fill in the blank.
Activity 2: Ray Tracing
These students will be expected to create either a hard poster or digital poster illustrating ray diagrams for a concave and convex mirror with an object at varying positions (relative to the focal point).
5 students who appear to have limited knowledge about the topic, of which 3 are struggling with language and are at different reading levels and 2 students who have little to no comprehension of the the topic and need to be tested further for special needs
ELL Students
Activity 1: Problem Set
These students will be given a vocabulary list along with their problem set. The vocabulary list will also have accompanying images next to words to help explain their meaning. There will be no short answer questions, they will all be multiple choice. They will all work as a group and be allowed to use their phones to translate any words they do not understand.
Activity 2: Ray Tracing
I will work closely with the students on how to create ray tracing diagrams. Once they understand the few "rules" needed to create ray tracing diagrams the fact that they struggle with English should not cause too much difficulty since this is an assignment that does not rely on reading or writing. Once they understand the concept and feel they can create their own ray tracings they will join the proficient group for this assignment.
