The challenge of decolonization in Africa, The Congo Sapeur, Human Zoo,…

The Congo Sapeur
My Question
- what's the difference between La Sape and the fashion victims?
- Why La Sape are male? In our traditional thought females are more care about their appearance.
-
After world war 2, the former servicemen left. They brought clothes from France, met up to show off. They don't wear fake.
They are known as "the society of Ambianceurs and elegant people", a group of gentleman and also a way of dressing, behaving.
They think what matter is how stylish they are, and the price.
They won't tell their family because it will anger them. Some sapeurs are in danger because they sacrifice their life for beauty but get nothing.
in the world of Sapeur, it doesn't matter how rich you are, what kind of job you have.
Human Zoo

Nazi and Human Zoo:
-
They took the ideas that were promoted in human zoos further than anyone else instituting a systematic elimination of inferior race in the defense of their own superior Aryan race.
Ota Banga, pygmy from the Congo
In 1905 Samuel Phillips Verner took Ota Benga back to Congo but Ota Benga found that he had no home to go back to. He felt he is a stranger and he wasn't accepted in his own land anymore.
Human Zoo taught the public that racism was scientific. This new science of race would inspire and feed the ideology of the Nazis.
The important/interesting/shocked thing is that Samuel Phillips Verner used his experiences in adventures to change the way the western world saw race forever.
French Colonization
Second(1789-1870)
-
-
-
Slavery is abolish in French colonies in 1794 but is restored by Napoleon Bonaparte in 1802 besides Haiti.
-
1848, slavery is finally abolished by undersecretary of state in the Second French Republic Victor Scoelcher
Abolition of slavery is used as justification for colonization and formerly enslaved people remained in poor life.
Third(1870 - )
Started in 1870, France lost the war with Prussians.
In order to rebuild the glory, France started to put colonies as a part of its national identity.
1885 Berlin Conference, specify the terms and conditions of future colonial enterprises in Africa.
Jules Ferry argued the policy would benefit the French financially and that it was part of the nation’s duty as a civilized society to spread their culture to “the inferior races.”
The important thing I learned is that I have a rough outline and timeline of French colonization in Africa in my mind.

FREN160 A1 Final Project

proposal structure
In the final project, I will trace the track of Jules Ferry's colonial expansion. From ... to ..., Jules Ferry's colonial expansion is based on a consideration of increasing the interests of French empire and mingle among the European politicians.
