Testing Serum Levels
increase LDL cholesterol plasma levels (Alonso, de Isla, Muniz-Grijalvo, Diaz-Diaz & Mata, 2018)
Screening
screening for family history of hypercholesterolemia and history of early Atherosclerotic Cardiovascular Disease (ASCVD) (Alonso et al., 2018)
Criteria for suspected patients with FH according to the National Lipid Association
-Patients who are > 20 years old with an LDL level >4.9 mmol/L and a non-high density lipoprotein (HDL) cholesterol level >5.7mmol/L
-Individuals less than 20 years of age with LDL levels >4.1 mmol/L or non-HDL level >4.9 mmol/L
Lipid screening of children who are between the ages of 9-11 is recommended
If there is a family history of hypercholesterolemia or early onset ASCVD, screening in children as young as 2 years old is recommended
