Pre-Assessment: Students demonstrate what they already know
Give them a MAD LIBS quiz to circle either 'when' or 'while' in the form of a composed email. The teacher will grade it quickly, and sort them into different piles while students watched a short Powtoons video or a PPT video about past continuous and simple past using when and while.

Demonstrate how to change these sentences using the past continuous and simple past using when and while.
Ask what they did over the weekend or summer break. Write what they said on the board. Then, demonstrate target grammar
Show an interesting short video that would be fun to talk about which would be open for discussion and the target grammar. Then, demonstrate target grammar
Choose one of the following:
Differentiated Strategies
High-level: the 5 students who answered most, including the most difficult, of the pre-assessment questions correctly
The students who scored 100 on the quiz would take the quiz answers and flip the two sentence clauses and change the ‘when’ to ‘while’ or vice versa.
They would call on the teacher when finished, checking their work. The group would help each other make any corrections.
Once they’re all done, they’d make a story as a group. A single paper would be passed around as each student would continue the story with various sentences, including the using the target grammar before passing it on.
Middle-level: the 12 students who have some knowledge about the topic as shown in their score, but need to develop higher order thinking skills
Game of their choosing. This is one example:

After spending some time on the game, learn to flip the sentences, changing "When" to "while" and practice comma placement.
Students who missed 1-2 answers had problems with the past continuous, comma placements, and past vs. present verbs tenses.
Low-level: the 5 students who appear to have limited knowledge about the topic
The group would work together to play an online interactive game of their choosing.
As the sentences show up on the screen, they would practice writing that sentences on paper, and circle the correct comma placements as well as “while” with a blue color. Visual aide should help the special needs and ELL students. Then they’d re-write the sentence flipped, and mark an X between the sentence clauses meet, as well as the “when” with a red color.

When they practiced enough, they would take turns competing 1 on 1 scoring wins for their team.

For students who need to practice sentence formation:

The 2 students who have little to no comprehension of the topic and need to be tested further for special needs
Students who got 1 or none correct had problems with basic sentence grammar such as irregular verbs, simple past tense, punctuation, and concepts of when and while.
Progress Monitoring Assessment:
Low-level: Take the MAD LIBS quiz (fill in the blank, with a circle between sentence clauses, which they'll either write a red "X" indicating no comma, or to write a comma)
Middle-level: Take five of the High-level's sentences and flip them using "when" and "while" and correct comma placement.
High-level: Present their story as a presentation. They are graded by demonstration of detailed knowledge without needing to look back at the presented work.
