The objectives of research
Description - undertaken using graphical representations and statistical measures that are not inferential
Explanation - involve precise hypothesis to be confronted and employs inferential statistical tests
Forecasting - just a little more frequent
Control - objective rarely set in psychological research
Modelling - gathers the various variables in a coherent ways

Types of research objectives
General objectives
they are broad statements of desired outcomes, general intention of the research
they emphasis what is to be accomplished
they address the long term project outcomes
general objective do not need to be numbered
Specific objectives
specific list of task needed to accomplish the goals of the project
emphasis how aims are to be accomplished
must be highly focused and feasible
address the more immediate project outcome
make accurate use of concepts and be sensible and precisely described
Rules of good research objective (SMART)
Specific - what precisely do you hope to achieve from undertaking the research
Measurable - what measures will you use to determine whether you have achieved your objectives
Achievable - can you achieve the targets?
Realistic - will you have the time and energy to complete the research on time
Timely - will you have time to accomplish all your objectives in the time frame you have set
