Chapter 17 Qualitative Data Analysis
Quality data analysis is usually based on an interpretative philosophy. The idea is to examine the meaningful & symbolic content of qualitative data.
Qualitative analysis perspectives
Qualitative analysis deals with words & is guided by fewer universal rules & standardized procedures than statistical analysis
Qualitative analysis is arguably replicable insofar as others can be walked through the analyst's thought processes & assumption.
Variety of approaches - ethnography, narrative analysis, discourse analysis & textual analysis
Qualitative analysis is a loop-like pattern of multiple rounds of revisiting the data as additional question emerge, new connections are unearthed
Qualitative mode of data analysis provide ways of discerning, examining, comparing, & contrasting & interpreting meaningful patterns or themes.
Process in Qualitative Analysis
Data display - a display can be an extended piece of text / a diagram, chart or matrix that provides a new way of arranging and thinking about the more textually embedded data
Conclusion, drawing and verification
Data reduction - a process of selecting, focusing, simplifying, abstracting and transforming the data that appear in written up field notes / transcriptions.
Formats for Analysis
Content analysis - a mechanical process with the analysis being left until the data has been collected.
Discourse analysis - Some researchers have named conversational analysis, although others would argue that the the two quite different.
Thematic analysis - this type of analysis is highly inductive, that is, the themes emerge from the data & are not imposed upon it by the researcher.
Processing the data
As the research progress, interpret the data to gain an understanding of what is going on.
Finally, undertake the mechanical process of analyzing the data.
Judge the value of the data, especially that which may come from dubious sources.
Think about the data from the moment you start to collect the information.
There are many different type of qualitative data analysis. The method a researcher use will depend on the research topic, the researcher preferences & the time, equipment and finances available to the researcher. Qualitative data analysis gives emphasis on the systematic and empirical ways of analyzing the data
Practical advice in conducting qualitative analysis
Involve more than one person
Leave enough time & money for analysis & writing
Start the analysis right away & keep a running account of it in your notes
Be selective when using computer software packages in qualitative analysis
