Chapter 11 Research Methodology
In social sciences research, the widely use approach is qualitative & quantitative approach. However, which approach is to be used depends on several factors such as nature & objective of the research , the context of a particular research setting, & the specific problems.
Qualitative Methodology
Qualitative data is to provide depth & details of action, events, & perspectives through the eyes of the actor or those being investigate
Element in Qualitative Approach
Data collection - Collect verbal & non-verbal data
Data analysis - Nature of data is more subjective in which the scrutinize the body of data in search of patterns - subjectivity - that the data reflect
Process - Specific focus, design, measurement instruments & interpretations possibly changing along the way
Reporting findings - use more personal, literary style & include the participants' own language & perspectives
Purpose - A better understanding of complex situations
Quantitative Methodology
Involves developing more systematic & sophisticated procedures to test, prove & verify hypothesis
Element in Quantitative Approach
Data collection - Conduct validity & reliability analyses for variables. Data collected from a right sample
Data analysis - Conclusions are drawn from research hypotheses. statistical procedures are used to analyse data
Process - Research is conducted through structured guidelines where a study begins with determining the research problem, objectives, conceptual framework, research questions and/or hypothesis.
Reporting findings - Interpretation should be based on the data. ( avoid personal views)
Purpose - Study a crucial phenomenon & these findings can be generalized to other persons and/or places
Integrating Quantitative & Qualitative Methodologies
Quantitative Methodology
Its method produce quantifiable, reliable data that are usually generalize to some larger population
Decontextualizes human behavior in a way that removes the events from its real worlds setting & ignore the effects of variables that have not been included in the model.
Designed to ensure objectivity, generalizability & reliability
Qualitative Methodology
They generates rich, detailed data that leaves the participants' perspective intact & provide a context for health behavior
Designed to provide the researcher with the perspectives of target audience members through immersion in a culture & direct interaction with the people under study.
Triangulation
Investigator triangulation - several investitors are used to gather & compare data
Theory triangulation - multiple perspectives & theory are used to gather and compare data
Data triangulation - involves using a variety of data sources
Methodological triangulation - multiple research methods are used to study a single problems
Methodological aspect are important part in any academic research. Without a sound & solid methodological aspect research activities will faces a lot of a problem.
