Special Education Process - Identifying and Intervention

Sarah E. Jaffe - CERT 06/2020 Cohort 4 - Module 2 Unit 3 Activity 2

Step 1: Is the student struggling?

I'm not sure. What should I look for?

Easily distracted, low self-esteem, problematic in class, no eye contact, confused easily, may be asking repetitive questions or making the same mistakes, may seem bored in class. Most importantly is that they cannot and/or are not following the class or are not able to keep up.

Step 2: Time for intervention!

Identify and have early intervention

A formal review should be done after one of the following is brought forward: parental concern and/or teacher concerns and/or administrative concerns

Try to make special accommodations for the student. Identify what areas they are struggling and try to make an action plan to see if the student responds positively to early intervention strategies

Step 3: Refer to a counselor or specialist

This is the official referral that starts the steps to see if they are in need of a formal IEP or special education services. In my school this is with a team: the counselor, the vice principal and the parents must all work together

Step 4: Formal Diagnosis

Testing is done to understand the students need. In Turkey a formal paper would then be attached to the students file noting they are eligible for special services

Step 5: Preparing and implementing the IEP

At this stage the teachers, counselors, vice principal and parents are involved and the student has a formal diagnosis. They should work together as a team and meet regularly to adjust the IEP as needed

IEP is put into place and the teacher's make adjustments through differentiation to try to help the student achieve their goals

Step 6: Revise and Check Up

Is the student still struggling?

Some students overcome the time of special education, whether they outgrow the disability or just the needs change.

It is needed each year or semester to consider how the student is progressing and if their needs have changed
