Facial (CN VII) and Trigeminal Nerve CN V - Coggle Diagram
Facial (CN VII) and Trigeminal Nerve CN V
Path of Facial Nerve
Travels through facial canal is between internal acoustic meatus and stylomastoid foramen
In canal, nerve makes a turn denoted by geniculate ganglion
In facial canal, there are 3 branches that arise
Greater petrosal n. which arises near geniculate gnaglion
Chorda tympani n. arises near stylomastoid foramen
Exits the temporal bone via stylomastoid foramen
CN VII heads anteriorly towards parotid gland.
Passes through parotid gland
Branch off into 5
Buccal
Mandibular
Zygomatic
Cervical
Temporal
Two Zebras Ate My Cookies, Ate for Buccal
Nerves are very thin
Before entering parotid gland
CN VII gives off posterior auricular n.
Foramen is between styloid and mastoid process
N. to stapedius m. (middle of canal?)
not high yield
Path of Trigeminal Nerve/CN V
3 Openings
Foramen Rotundum
Maxillary n.
Enters infraorbital canal
Within Infraorbital canal
Leaves canal through infraorbital foramen
Infraorbital n. branches into 3 terminal ends
External nasal branch
Superior Labial n.
Inferior palepral branch
Two branches, middle and anterior sup alveolar n.
Before entering, branch of posterior sup. alveolar n.
Branch off into zygomatic n.
Zygomatic-temporal
Zygomatic-facial
Contribute to pterygopalatine ganglion
Greater and lesser palatine nerves.
Nasopalatine n.
Foramen ovale
Mandibular n.
4 main branches
Lingual n.
Run on the interior of the mandible
Combines with chorda tympani (facial n.)
Submandibular ganglion.

Buccal branch
Buccal(terminal end)
Deep Temporal n.
N. to lateral pterygoid
Masseteric n.
Buccal gives off 3 branches
Inferior alveolar n.
Goes into the mandibular canal.
Exiting out of canal as mental n. Exit is called mental foramen
Gives off branch to n. to mylohyoid before entering canal
N. to mylohyoid gives off n. to ant. belly of digastric
N. to mylohyoid
Auriculoposterior n.
Superior Orbital Fissure
Ophthalmic n.
Has three branches after exiting fissure
Nasocillary
Infratrochlear n
Branch of Ant. Ethmoid n.
