Introduction
i used to not believe my predecessors when they said that being a part of the student council "changed them" or "helped them grow" i thought it was more of what you're supposed to say and not what truly happens.
As a person responsible for the team's effort, could i really value her personal effort over everyone else's?
when i was first bestowed with the position of literary captain, my duties were mentioned in a very clear and direct form, but over the course of my tenure i realized how much more it meant.

hard work is important, but timing is more important.
Conclusion
as Gandhi said, "the truth is still the truth" and at that moment, the truth was that winning the competition would ensure the benefit of the team and for that, I had to choose the person who was more skilled rather than the one who worked hard and was struggling.
most of the team members didn't approve of my decision but we had a discussion and made an informed decision the fact that they won strengthen the notion.
months down the road, that girl was asked this question in her interview for the post of literary captain, she gave the same response i did.
I believe that a better way to approach things is to care about being correct. Being correct means that you've made choices that are giving you the best chance to succeed, even if it goes against what you wanted to be right, or initially believed to be right.
