What is Cyberbullying?
bullying that takes place using electronic technology: such as cellphones, computers, and tablets as well as communication tools such as social media sites, text messages, chat, and websites
why is cyberbullying different?
kids who are cyberbullied are often bullied in person as well
kids have a harder time getting away from the behavior
can happen any time of the day or night
messages can be posted anonymously and distributed quickly to a wide audience
deleting inappropriate pictures, texts, messages can be difficult after they have been sent or posted
Effects of Cyberbullying
use alcohol or durgs
skip school
experience in person bullying
be unwilling to attend school
receive poor grades
have low self esteem
health problems
self harm
Frequency of Cyberbullying
2010-2011 9% of students in grades 6-12 experience cyberbullying
2013 15% of high school students (9-12) were cyberbullied
Preventing Cyberbullying
be aware of what you kids are doing online
ask questions
remind them that you can review their online communication at any time
learn about the websites and apps they are using
ask a trusted family friend to follow them on social media
encourage your kids to tell you if they see someone being cyberbullied
establish rules about technology use
understand and report cyberbullying
to law enforcement and online service providers, schools
understand school rules
