The Roles Children Play in Bullying
Roles kids play
bully others, they can be bullied, or they may witness bullying
when kids are involved, they often play more than one role
kids who bully: children engage in bullying behavior towards their peers, many risk factors involved, students may need support to change their behavior
kids who are bullied: children are targets of bullying behavior, some factors put children more at risk, but not all children with similar characteristics will experience bullying
even in they are not involved they may contribute to the behavior
kids who assist: may not start the bullying or lead the behavior, but serve as an "assistant" to those who are bullying, they encourage the bullying behavior and may join in
kids who reinforce: not directly involved in behavior but provide an audience for the bully, often laughing or providing support for the children who are bullying
outsiders: remain separate from the bullying situation, neither reinforce or defend the child being bullied, do not provide feedback about the situation to show they are on anyone's side, they may want to help but don't know how
kids who defend: actively comfort the child being bullied and may come to the child's defense when the bullying occurs
Importance of Not Labeling Kids
it is easy to call the kids who bully others "bullies" and those who are targeted "victims" but this may have unintended consequences
send a message that the child's behavior cannot change
fail to recognize the multiple roles that children might play
disregard other factors contributing to the behavior
focus on the behavior
instead of calling the child "bully" refer to them as " the child who bullied"
instead of calling the child a "victim" refer to them as "the child who was bullied"
instead of calling a child a "bully/victim" refer to them as "the child who was both bullied and bullied others"
