Marcus: Marcus is an African American gang member who has been thrown about by his mother for gang affiliations. Marcus is a very stubborn character but when he finally lets Ms Gruwell in, we see another side to Marcus, he is very loving and caring and not all tough. He hates the way he lives and aims to change the way of the gang lifestyle and graduate high school.

Ms Erin Gruwell: Erin Gruwell is in her first year of teaching English with the intention of make a change to the world. Erins father was an activist African American rights and that is where she gets her drive. She is from a background where she is better off than most people and she finds it hard to deal with the students irrational behaviour. As she gets more and more used to the kids she makes a break through and really helps the students get through high school and give them reason to be who they are.

Eva Benitez: Eva is a Latino student in ms Gruwells class. Her father was recently jailed for a crime that he didn’t commit and because of this she had developed a very strong hate toward anyone that’s a different race to her. She is apart of the same gang as her father and she has witnessed the killing of a young man by her boyfriend and this has put her in a similar situation was to her father where they can send the accused away or she can send the person guilty away which is her boyfriend.

Context: Freedom writers is based after the LA Riots where schools are being integrated. Gang violence is running rampant on the streets after the riots and this is affecting everyone at all ages. Woodrow Wilson is has a very high quality education system but since it being apart of the new integration system we see the teachers not willing to help the students that are being integrated leading to mass fights and no leaning happening. The students come from very poor and violent backgrounds. The students are showed no love but one English teacher aims to change all that and to get the students through high school and onto bigger and better things.
Integration is the act of bringing someone together and was introduced to American in the mid to late 1900’s. It allowed white and black Americans live together and not be split apart like they had been for so long.

1992 LA Riots were riots about the brutal beating of a black man named Rodney king. Their beating was in 1991 but when the four police officers were acquitted in 1992 the riots broke out and this forced many laws to be changed. Many shops, cars and other building along the streets of LA were destroyed leaving fires behind them after 5 days of rioting.

Segregation is the act of separating one group from everything else. Segregation was abundant in the 1900’s towards African Americans, they were not allowed to attend the same school, the same housing, there were coloured toilets. In these times the whites believed they were superior to the black man.
