At this point in the play, Tiresisas and two priets attempt to summon the ghost of King Laius to discover the identity of his murderer.

The soloist sings the piece to one of the furies, Alecto to calm her- Alecto's role is to taunt and persecute Oepidus for killing his father.

Features of the ground bass include: it is only 3 bars long, only uses quaver rythms, based on an arpegio, semitone intervals (e.g f sharp to a g) and rises from an 'A' before falling at the end.
