Erin Gruwell is a highschool teacher. She is new at the highschool she teachers at the movie. Her classroom is filled with kids of mixed races, and she applied for that spot because she believes that everyone deserves the same level of education. She does a lot for her students and she is always trying to understand what injustices they all face everyday.
Eva
Description
Eva is a teenage girl who goes through what every teenager goes through and more. At a young age Eva loses her father as he gets arrested for something he did not do. This would have had a huge impact on her as she would have grown up without a father figure. When the students play the line game in class, we find out that Eva and some of her classmates have lost many friends due to gang violence. Throughout the film we see small fractions of her life and some of the injustices she faces. She is angry and wants revenge on the people who are not “her own”. Throughout the film Eva’s morals change and she grows as a person have. She is happy and focusing on her education and.
Mrs Campbell
Mrs Campbell is the principal of the highschool that EG teaches at. Mrs Campbell’s view one the students is very different to EGs perception. Mrs Campbell Believes that the students don’t deserve an education and that they are the main reason for all the problems at the school. Mrs Campbell is one of the antagonists of the film.

When Mrs Gruwell goes to the school library to borrow books for her students, Mrs Campbell says it is not allowed, she says that the students will ruin the books and she makes racist comments such as “students like yours” which is referring to the mixed race of her classroom

Context
Freedom writers is a film about injustices, gang violence and discrimination. This film takes place in the US in the 90’s after the LA riots. At one of the high schools an integration program is put in place for the students of varied races. An English teacher who is new to this school gets this class to teach and she tries to understand the injustices her students face on an everyday basis. She gives them the chance to tell their individual stories which gives them a voice. Her goal is to inspire the students to want an education and to live a better life.
Integration
Integration was a policy that was put in place to stop discrimination against African Americans and to provide equality to all races.
segregation
Segregation was a separation method that was used to discriminate against people of colour. for example, if you were white you had access to better services than to someone who was black.
LA riots
the 1992 LA riots was a civil rights movement where people were rioting because of police brutality, inequality and racism. A man named Rodney King was arrested and beaten by 4 police man, three of them white, and was video taped and broadcasted on TV.
