Summarise ways to establish ground rules with learners.
Positive reinforcement
"thank you for coming back on time'
"Thank you for sharing that with us"
Ownership
Learners to come up with their own rules. More likely to follow
Clear and simple language
Positively worded and framed
Avoid "don't" and instead frame positively.
e.g instead of Don't use mobile phones in the lesson - Say - Mobile phones cn be used for capturing learning e.g photos - be realistic - learners will need to take photos! but not phonically in the middle of the session
Lead by example, be a role model
Learners will look to the trainer as a guide. How they conduct themselves. Professionalism, attitudes and following the rules is key to students then following the leader and hopefully doing the same
Discussed and negotiated
Learners to decide and come up with the rules and negotiated . This way rules will be realistic for the group and their needs
Put in place after icebreaker
When the learners are more relaxed and even have a cup of tea in their hand! Meeting basic needs and learners are relaxed they wil be able to think about rules that they can follow
Include everyone
Everyone has a perspective. Including everyone either verbally or written is important to building a team approach on agreeing the rules
Flexibility
Being totally strict on rules isn't realistic. Humans sometimes don't stick to rules, whether its intentional or not. It's important to reflect if the rules need to be adapted. Do learners need longer break or time to reflect as a group?
