Reef management.
Science of Adaptation
improve the scientific understanding of how coral reefs can adapt to rapid change, and is using this knowledge to identify conservation strategies that promote adaptation and account for uncertainty about future environmental conditions.
Intact Reef Ecosystems
Conduct scientific research to identify which restoration techniques and methodologies are the most successful at rebuilding damaged reefs.
Partner with the tourism industry and dive community to raise awareness and reduce the adverse effects of unsustainable activities like overcrowding and reef trampling.
-
Establish management plans for protected areas, such as Marine Protected Areas (MPAs) or Locally Managed Marine Areas (LMMAs), that include habitat protections such as prohibiting destructive fishing practices or reducing anchor damage to reefs.
Increase compliance with laws and regulations that protect reef habitat by conducting law enforcement patrols, clarifying governance and building awareness among community members.
Strengthen coastal communities’ capacity to generate income from tourism in a way that protects coral reefs and supports local livelihoods.
Increase stewardship for coral reefs through education and awareness building with community members about coral reef ecosystems and the threats facing them.
Clean Water for Reefs
Scientifically monitor water quality to understand the nature of the problem (e.g., source, magnitude) and identify solutions.
Build and update ineffective wastewater treatment infrastructure (e.g., cesspools), in collaboration with local governments and communities
Build awareness among community members, local governments and the tourism industry about the detrimental effects of poor water quality on human health and the environment.
Reduce sediment and nutrient delivery to coastal waters by motivating shoreline property owners to employ reef-friendly best practices.
Restore streams, watersheds and riparian vegetation to create healthy watersheds that capture and stabilize nutrients and sediments and prevent them from reaching the ocean.
