Heart Failure - Coggle Diagram
Heart Failure
When the heart is unable to pump sufficient cardiac output to meet the body's metabolic demands
Impaired ventricular contraction (HF with reduced ejection fraction
S/S of HF are directly related to the pathophysiology processes that cause the pump to fail
Impaired ventricular relaxation (HF with preserved ejection fraction)
Left Heart Failure (L HF)
Usually happens first and results in the pulmonary S/S due to back up of blood in the pulmonary circulation
Signs and Symptoms
Orthopnea
Fatigue/Weakness
Progressive dyspnea
S3 heart sound
Paroxysmal nocturnal dyspnea
Cerebral Hypoxia
S/S of Cerebral Hypoxia
Impaired memory
Sleep disturbances
Confusion
Restlessness
Irritability
Crackles at lung bases
Pulmonary Edema
S/S of Pulmonary Edema
Diaphoresis
Tachypnea
Cyanosis
Anxiety
Pallor
Agitation
Marked dyspnea
Enlarged heart
Right Heart Failure (R HF)
L HF often leads to R HF; results in back up of blood in the peripheral circulation leading to more systemic S/S
Signs and Symptoms
Anorexia, Nausea, Bloating
S3 or S4 heart sounds
Fatigue
Jugular Vein Distention (JVD)
Ascites (accumulation of fluid in the peritoneal cavity; swelling in the abdomen)
Weight Gain
Hepatomegaly
Cyanosis
Decreased urine output
Dependent edema
