STOP BULLYING ON THE SPOT

Separate students involved
Make sure everyone is safe
Stay calm
Be respectful

Don't try to sort out the facts right there
Don't question students in front of peers
Don't make students apologize and move on
Get police or medical help if
A weapon is involved
Threats of serious injury or hate-motivated violence
There is serious bodily harm or sexual abuse
Anyone is accused of criminal activity
Get the facts to find out what happened
Keep all children involved separated
Get every side of the story possible, including from other adults and students
Listen without blaming
Don't call the act bullying during the investigation. There are many sides to the story, and it may be difficult to get a full picture of the entire situation.
Is this incident/relationship bullying
What is the relationship of the students involved? Have there been past conflicts?
Is there a power imbalance? This is NOT just physical strength, but also mental/emotional strength, and peer relationships
Has a situation similar to this happened before? Is the student concerned that it will happen again?
Have the students previously dated? If so, evaluate different questions and processes.
