Memory AO1 Overview

Sensory memory is information from senses. When attention is paid to environmental factors, it converts to STM
proposed by Atkinson & Shiffrin, consisting of 3 stores: sensory register, STM, and LTM
Without maintenance rehearsal, information is forgotten and lost from STM through the processes of either displacement or decay
Encoding - how info is changed to be stored in memory e.g. visually, acoustically, (STM), or semantically (mainly LTM, but can also be visual or acoustic).
Capacity - how much info can be stored: Sensory Reg; very large, STM; 7+/-2 items, LTM; unlimited
Duration - period of time info can last in stores: Sensory Reg; 1/4 - 1/2s, STM; 0-18s, LTM; unlimited
WMM Baddeley & Hitch
replaced the idea of a unitary STM, suggesting instead a system involving active processing and STM storage of info.
Central executive - acts as a filter, determining which info is attended to, can process info in all sensory forms, directs info to other slave systems and collects responses. Limited capacity, deals with one piece of info at a time
Phonological Loop - temporary storage system for holding auditory info in a speech-based form. Comprised of: the inner ear/phonological store; to store words heard, and the inner voice/articulatory process; allowing for maintenance rehearsal to keep info in working memory.
Visuospatial Sketchpad - temporary memory system holding visual and spatial info. Comprised of: Visual cache; for storing data about form & colour, and the inner scribe; for recording the arrangement of objects in the visual field, and rehearses and transfers info from visual cache to central executive.
Episodic Buffer - acts as 'backup' temporary storage for info which communicates with LTM, and the slave system components of WM. Recalls material from LTM to integrate into STM when WM requires it.
