Raleigh :star:
A young officer fresh out of school, he went to the same school as Stanhope and he has always admired him. He is a nervous guy, nervousness relaxes when he is having a conversation with Osborne. Raleigh's hero - Stanhope. He doesn't have any experience in war because he is new but he is a brave officer. Naive

His way of coping is to talk about flowers and the garden at his home and humour as well, but more importantly food
When he talks he always tries to be cheerful, even defending Hibbert at one point

He is respected by others and he can be considered as Stanhope's "right hand". He keeps his captain going, helps him with drinking problems.

Although Osborne is terrified to participate in the raid, he shows bravery by accepting his fate and doing his duty.

He is afraid of higher ranks and going out to fight in the frontline, but when the time came, he accepted it as it is

Colonel
The Colonel is Stanhope's superior. He tells Stanhope about the German attack. The Colonel is more concentrated on completing orders set by the general rather than the soldiers' lives, which is shown by the lack of compassion and sensitivity when Osborne dies. He got used to the fact that war takes lives of many people.
Hardy
Part of a different company. Uses humour as his coping mechanism. Gives the first impression of trench life. Does not like Stanhope

A briefly mentioned character at the end of the play, during the German attack
Sergeant Major tells Stanhope that he was hit badly(Its either means him as a person or his party of soldiers)

Plot
Act 3
Osborne dies during the raid while the raid is succesful strategically and Colonel shows his true side to Stanhope - not caring about casualties.
After the raid Raleigh is shocked and is unable to speak while Colonel says that he'll give him a medal or something.
Osborne and Raleigh talk before the raid to clear their mind from awful things that will happen. Osborne leaves his things on table.
At the end, Raleigh is shot and the Sergeant Major brings him down to where Stanhope is. Stanhope lays him down on Osborne's bed. Raleigh dies and Stanhope goes up. They all charge against the Germans and they likely all die.
Stanhope and Colonel discuss the plan for the upcoming raid. Osborne and Raleigh are chosen. Stanhope tries to argue the plan but fails.

Act 2
Osborne and Raleigh talk about their lives before the war. Stanhope informs the soldiers that the German has confessed that the attack is going to be in two days.
Since Stanhope is worries that Raleigh can tell his sister the truth about the captain's addiction, he decides to censor letters of the new lieutenant. However, he finds out that Raleigh describes him as "the finest officer in the battalion".

Although Hibbert tells Stanhope that he cannot fight because of neuralgia and he has to leave, Stanhope threatens execution for desertation, convincing the the soldier to stay.
While Osborne thinks that the raid will end badly and resigns to his fate, Raleigh is enthusiastic about the attack.
Act 1

First scene starts with Hardy showing Osborne around their newly assigned trenches. Hardy points out the poor quality beds. He dries his sock, showing that the trenches were wet, damp and dirty.
Setting :
Most of the setting happens in the dugout- other areas are only referred too- the audience don't see them.
The lighting is very dim and soldiers try to make the dugout more welcoming by puting posters on the walls
