TRANSPORT IN HUMANS
-
Blood
Red blood cells
Adapatations
-No nucleus to provide more space to carry more haemoglobin, more oxygen trans
Biconcave shape to increase sa to vol ratio, faster diff of oxy, faster transport
-

-
White blood cells
Lymphocytes
Produces antibodies which cause foreign bodies, causing them to agglutinate so that phagocytosis can occur, antibodies destroy bacteria by attaching itself and also neutralises toxns
Phagocytes
Phagocytes are needed for phagocytosis to occur in which phagocytes ingest and engulf then digest foreign bodies to destroy them
Blood Vessels
Arteries
Function
Carries blood rich in oxygen away from heart to rest of body (except pulmonary artery - deoxygenated)
Adaptations
Thick elastic muscular walls to withstand the high blood pressure of blood forced out of heart
Small lumen
Elasticity of arteries help it stretch and recoil to push blood in spurts and give rise to pulse
Capillaries
Function
Allow exchange of gases, nutrients, waste materials btwn blood and cells
Adaptation
Endothelium is partially permeable to allow certain substances to diffuse quickly
Branch repeatedly to provide a large surface area for exchange of subs btwn blood and tissue cells
One cell thick so faster diffusion
Veins
Adaptations
Thinner elastic walls as blood carried is of low pressure
Contains valve which help prevent backflow of blood
