Formative
The assessment/activity teacher will use to check students understandings, learning needs and academic progression during a lesson. The data gathered will help teacher determine further steps during a lesson.

Benchmark
The benchmark helps evaluate students grade-level standards and learning goals. Students must reach level of achievement in each grade and the benchmark helps determine where the students rank in comparison to others.

Summative
The assessment is used to evaluate student learning at the end of a unit. Teachers will usually use the data from summative assessment to compare with a standard or benchmark.

Diagnostic
A diagnostic is a pre-assessment that teachers can use to evaluate students individually. The diagnostic will provide the teacher with data that she will find useful when planning a lesson.
