Assessments
Formative
Definition: This a form of assessment that gathers information and data on student learning. This allows for self and classroom adjustments as needed.
Example One: Teaching a lesson and then asking students to submit a five question quiz over the days content. Any misconceptions can be caught and retaught the following day.
Example Two: Beginning a lesson with a classroom discussion. This is a great way to assess student comprehension. This is will also allow and educator to determine what may need to be reviewed and what needs to be retaught in depth.

Interim/Benchmark
Definition: This is a form of assessment that is periodically conducted through our the school year.
Example One: At the end of the six weeks students may be asked to complete a project that demonstrates their understanding.
Example Two: Personally, throughout the year we had to collect writing samples from all of our students. This would eventually be used for TELPAS data. However, the current assignment offered little data and feedback for the teachers or students.

Summative
Definition: This is an assessment that is conducted at the end of a large chunk of learning. These are considered to be major assignments, standardize testing, final exams.
Example one: Student take their STAAR Test at the end of the academic year. This is an assessment that will determine their understanding of appropriate grade level content. This assessment often determines is the student will continue onto the next grade level.
Example Two: At the end of each unit or six weeks, students take a final exam to assess their understanding of the content. This data is often used to create projection data for end of the STAAR exam.

Performance
Definition: This assessing students based on their performance or demonstration of their capabilities.
Example One: Student may be asked to maintain a binder. If the teacher asked students to submit their binders for grading then this could be a performance assessment. Seeing how students are maintaining their content.
Example Two: Students may be asked to participate in a group project. At the end of the projects, group members are asked to complete a survey to assess the participation of their peers. These survey may determine the individual grades each team member may receive. This would be considered a performance assessment.
Diagnostic
Definition: This is a form of assessment that determines students individual strength and weaknesses.
Example One:In my district, at the beginning of the first grade, all students are tested for dyslexia. This would be considered a form of diagnostic assessment because this will determine if students are in need of additional support.
Example Two: Having your class complete the Howard Gardner's quick assessment to determine what type of learner they are. This data that is beneficial to the teacher and the student. It is a form of diagnostic assessment because it informs the teacher what might work best in the classroom and helps the student understand what will benefit them the most.

Example Two: Know that we know everything there is to know about the real number system, who can answer of essential question?
