Formative
Definition: Formative assessments are used to assess students during the process of learning. They are used to give feedback as well as support as to how to continue or modify instruction.**
Mini-Whiteboards: Teacher can ask students to write responses or work through a problem on their whiteboards. Students can hold up their whiteboards for the teacher to assess them, or the teacher can walk around to check.
Thumbs Up, Middle, or Down: Teachers can gather information on where their students stand with their understanding of a concept by checking for understanding. Thumbs up means they fully understand, thumbs in the middle means they kind of understand but need reinforcement, and thumbs down means they do NOT understand.
Summative
Definition: Summative assessments measure students proficiency at the end of a unit compared to a certain standard or benchmark.
Final Exam: This is an exam given to students at the end of a term or semester to assess their learning.

Interim/Benchmark
Definition: Interim/Benchmark assessments are used by teachers to determine if their student's learning is on track and to determine where they stand in their learning progress.
Snapshot Exam: Snapshot exams measure student learning from the beginning of the school year through different intervals throughout the year.

Definition: Performance assessments require students to carry out a task in order to measure their proficiency.

Diagnostic
Definition: Diagnostic assessments are used to guide instruction before it is delivered by assessing student's prior knowledge, strengths, and weaknesses.
BOY Running Record: Beginning of year running records are used to determine a student's reading level.
Pre-assessment/Informal Quiz: Multiple choice quiz that is not counted as a grade. Instead it is used to gather data on what student's already know.
