Formative
Definition: A formative assessment is used during instruction to identify what the student is or isn't mastering. The teacher them takes the information and adjusts instruction according to what the students need. Because it is used to guide instruction it is considered low stakes.
Example: With Concept Maps students can demonstrate their thinking and the teacher is able to see where reinforcements are needed.
Example: Exit Tickets are very versatile, they can be used to ask the students a question that checks for content knowledge regarding that days lesson or to ask the students for feedback directly.
Interm/Benchmark
Definition: An interim/benchmark assessment is given to student to evaluate their learning progress and guide future instruction
Example: The STARR is a standardized exam given to students to measure whether or not them met grade level expectations.
Example: A CBA is an exam given to students to measure the acquisition of content knowledge after a unit. It is also used to determine where the students need extra support.
Performace
Definition: A performance assessments gives students the opportunity to demonstrate mastery by performing a task instead of the traditional test.
Example: Dramatic enactment can be any type of performance where the students can think critically to demonstrate their content knowledge.
Example: Portfolio assessments have students work over time, teachers and students will be able to see their growth.
Diagnostics
Definition: A diagnostics assessment is used to assess students prior knowledge before the content is taught. The information helps the teacher decide what to focus on.
Example: KWL chart- This is a good assessment to see what your students already know. It is a graphic organizer where you write what they student already knows and what they want to know about the topic. Then you can come back at the end of the lesson to reflect over what they learned.

Summative
Definition: A summative assessment is used to evaluate what the students know and it is given at the end of a unit. Summative assessments are considered high stakes.
Example: Midterm exams are administered during the middle of a semester or year to measure where the students are. It can also be used to adjust future content.
