Definition: Assessing students during the learning process to monitor and adjust instruction so students can improve. It is a low stakes assessment as it is taken during the learning process.

Definition: Evaluate all student learning at the end of a unit or course. It is a high stakes assessment as it evaluates what students are supposed throughout the unit or course.

Definition: Assessment that is taken periodically throughout the school year to determine how students are progressing in the learning process.

Diagnostic
Definition: A pre-assessment given at the beginning of the year and before a unit. It helps the teacher identify student misconceptions, strengths and weaknesses so the teacher can adjust instruction.
