Summative
Definition - Summative assessments are assessments that allow teachers to see what students know from a larger chunk of learning. These may test over a full unit or semester period's worth of information.
Example 1 - End of the Year multiple-choice tests that test of subject knowledge gained throughout the collective school year
Example 2 - Short answer unit test that demonstrates students knowledge of multiple weeks of learning
Performance
Example 1 - Designing a science fair project to show learning from a unit of study in science

Definition - Performance assessments are assessments that test student knowledge by having them complete a task rather than complete a typical paper-pencil test.
Interim/Benchmark
Example 1 - STAAR testing or other standardized testing is often used to identify students progress and determine if they successfully met the grade-level learning requirements
Example 2 - Curriculum Based Assessments (CBA) are tests given to students a few times throughout the year in each subject area to determine and track student progress
Definition - Interim/Benchmark assessments are assessments done at various intervals throughout the year to see where students are at in terms of achievement and to help identify if they are on track.

Formative
Example 1 - In class responses, such as students answers to questions or activites completed
Example 2 - Exit tickets given at the end of class to see what students did or did not understand from that days lesson
Definition - Formative assessments are assessments that teachers do while students are still learning the content. They are quick checks of knowledge to gauge student understanding and allow the teacher to adjust instruction as needed.
Diagnostic
Example 1 - KWL Charts where students share what they already know about the topic prior to learning for that day

Definition - Diagnostic assessments are tests given prior to the start of a lesson or unit to see what students already know, misconceptions they may have, and any strong or weak areas. This data will help teachers be more prepared in the planning and teaching of the content and help ensure she meets their needs.
