Summative

Examples
Final exams- used to cover all course material and show evidence of student learning and retention of information.
Cumulative projects- Projects that incorporate information and skills that were taught throughout the unit of study. Usually high grade value.
Performance
Definition- type of assessment that requires students to perfom a task rather than traditional style test with multiple choice answers.
Examples
Portfolios-students create a portfolio of their written work that shows how they have progressed from the beginning to the end of class.

Interim/Benchmark
Definition- Period standardized texting throughout year. Low student feedback, formal style, and usually high grade value.
Examples
BOY- (beginning of the year testing) which is followed by MOY (Middle of the year testing). Meant to show students academic growth.
STAAR- Texas standardized test given to assess student learning of the entire year. Students must meet the minimum requirements to advance to the next grade level content.
Diagnostic
Definition- Used as forms of pre-assessments to determine the areas of support needed in the students as well as the areas that are better at. It is used to create and adjust lessons pacing and topics.
Examples
Initial writing prompts- used to assess students writing, comprehension, and problem solving skills depending on the topic.
KWL charts- students fill out a graphic organizer with what they know, what they want to learn, and at the end what they learned.
Formative
Definition- Process of gathering evidence of student learning. Teacher provides instant feedback and uses this information to adjust instruction. Usually low grade point worth.
Examples

Warm ups- used in beginning of class to scaffold prior knowledge from previous lessons. Used to get students started.
