Assessments
Formative
Definition: Formative assessments allow you to gather evidence of a students learning. Once you have gathered evidence, you can change your instruction to meet your students needs. This assessment can help you get a better idea of where your students are at. This assessment allows the teacher to get feedback from students and give feedback to students. It makes sure your students are successful. Grading is optional with these assessments.
Interim/Benchmark
Definition: This assessment is used to see if students are on the right path of their learning. They are used to keep track of student learning throughout their education. It shows where students are in their learning.
Summative
Definition: Summative assessments are given at the end of a unit or topic. These assessments are given to see what the students learned overall. It shows you if they were able to retain and learn the content. It allows the teacher to evaluate students learning.
Performance
Definition: This assessment is where students will perform tasks. This is not like other assessments where a student will answer questions. Students will perform for their assessment.
Diagnostic
Definition: This assessment is used as a pre-test. This allows teachers to see where their strengths and weaknesses are. From here teachers can create lessons that will reach all of their students needs.
Examples:
Think-Pair-Share: Students will think about the the question asked or content they learned. Then, students will pair up with a partner. Once they have paired up students will share their thoughts with their partner.
Class Discussions: By having class discussions it allows students to share their thoughts and ideas about the topic. This will allow the teacher to see what her students have learned and if they have any misunderstandings.
Examples:
End of Unit Exams: These exams will test students knowledge over the entire unit.
Final Projects: Final projects allow students to gather their learning and represent it through their project.
Examples:
STAAR: This assessment is used at the end of the school year to see what they learned in their grade level. It shows if they met grade level expectations or not.
Benchmark: Benchmarks are given every 6 weeks throughout the school year. This assessment allows the teacher to see if they are on the right path. Students are getting tested to make sure they are on the right path to grade level.
Examples:
Pre-tests: Pre-tests are given at the beginning before teaching any content. The pre-test will allow the teacher see what they may already know or any misconceptions the students may have.
KWL Charts: Teacher and students will create a chart with 3 columns. In the first column will be "K" where students will state what they already know about the topic/content. In the middle column there will be a "W" where students will state what they want to know. This is where students will formulate their own questions. Then the last column will be "L". At the end of the lesson students will come back to this column and state what they learned and answer any of the questions from the "W" column.
Examples:
Portfolios: Students can create portfolios to show the skills learned.
Fairs: Students are able to create to represent their knowledge.They will show their performance by creating.
