The Particle Theory of Matter
Matter
Matter is anything that has mass and occupies space.
It consists of Particles, Atoms and Molecules.
Properties of Matter
Properties of Solids
Definite mass
Definite shape
Volume doesn’t change
It doesn’t flow and it’s hard to compress (squash)
Properties of Gases
Definite mass
Takes up the shape of the container holding it.
Volume can vary
It flows and is easy to compress
Properties of Liquids
Definite mass
Shape varies and depends on the shape of the container holding it.
Volume doesn’t change
It’s hard to compress but flows easily
Atoms and Molecules
The universe is made up of atoms, which contain protons (positively charged particles), neutrons (particles with no charge), and electrons (negatively charged particles).
Molecules are formed when two or more atoms bond together. If molecules contain atoms of different elements, that substance is known as a compound.
The Particle Theory
Solids
Particles
Very low energy
They vibrate very less
They vibrate in their position
Position is fixed
Fixed particle structure
Lattice
Arrangement of particles
