Muscle Types
Introduction
- Muscles are how we are able to move and live
- All movement in the body is controlled by muscles
- Some muscles are working subconsciously
- Others are controlled by our thoughts
- All of our muscles together make up the body's muscular system.
How Muscles Work
- Muscles work by expanding and contracting.
- They have long, thin cells that are grouped into bundles, for example when a muscle fibergets a signal from its nerve, proteins and chemicals release energy to either contract the muscle or relax it.
- When the muscle contracts, this pulls the bone it is connected to, closer together.
- Also many of our muscles come in pairs. Example biceps and triceps in our arms.
- When we want to straighten our arm back out, the biceps are able to relax, allowing our arm to bend.
- However, when we want to straighten our arm back out, the biceps will relax and the triceps will contract.
- Muscle pairs are important as they allow us to move back and forth
Types of Muscles
- These muscles are the muscles that are under our conscious control and they work whenever we want them to.
- They are also known as skeletal muscles as they are attached to the bone
- They are responsible for the movement of body parts and its contraction makes possible locomotion, facial expressures, posture, and other voluntary movements of the body
- Fun Fact: 40% of your body mass is made up of skeletal muscle
- They are made up of muscle fibers which are multinucleated cells with nuclei located towards the periphery of the cells.
- The cell membrane of a muscle fiber is known as sarcolemma.
- The muscle fibers are arranged together in a bundle to form the muscle.
- The strength of voluntary muscles can be increased by exercising regularly.

-
- This is a special type of muscle that
forms the wall of the heart chambers.
- It is a type of involuntary muscle, as it contracts unconscioulsy
- It works non-stop without ever tiring. When it contracts it pumps blood out of the heart and around the body
-
- Involuntary Muscle are found on the walls of internal organs and they contract in waves
- Food travels through the digestive system and blood through the blood vessels in this way.
- This works without you consciously/controlling it, or even being aware of it
- Q: Where can you find an involuntary muscle?
