A volcano is a rupture in the crust of the Earth, that allows hot lava, volcanic ash, and gases to escape from a magma chamber below the surface.

They use monitors to detect movement in the rocks that make up the volcano and in the earth's crust. They also measure the gases that come out of the volcanic mountains, and even the angle of the slopes.

Indonesia is located between two continental plates: the Eurasian Plate (Sunda Plate) and the Australian Plate (Sahul Shelf); and between two oceanic plates: the Philippine Sea Plate and Pacific Plate.
The other, the local tsunami, travelled towards Indonesia, Thailand, and nearby islands in less than an hour.
