The Life-Changing Magic of Tidying Up
-Marie Kondo
Introduction
Clean everything all at once - KonMari
Organize your space, organize your life
If done as a special event, it often does not need to be repeated
Why I can't keep my house in order...
No one learns how to clean
We tidy a bit at a time when we should tidy definitively and all at once
We clean by location, rather than by category, and create redundant work
We try to "suit our personality"
Storage experts are hoarders and fancy storage things encourage clutter
Finish Discarding First
Two steps
Discard what you no longer need
Decide where to keep what you keep
Must be done in that order, specifically -
do not even begin to think about location until you've completed discarding or you'll get in the weeds
Your family doesn't need to see you
though don't throw their things away
"hand-me-downs" just become others' problems
Start with your own things, they will follow
Criterion to keep - does this item spark joy?
If not, why did you buy it? Did it serve it's purpose of
making you feel good when you purchased it?
teaching you what does not suit you?
Begin with the end in mind - what is your goal?
Why? - Connect with your passion.
One category at a time
Order is important
clothes
Books
Papers
Komono (miscellany)
Mementos
consider photos of mementos or scanning pictures and keeping digital copies
Focus on what you want to
keep
, not on throwing things away.
Tidying by Category works like magic...
Clothes
subdivide clothes (in this order)
tops
bottoms
hanging
socks
underwear
bags
accessories
event-specific (swimsuits, uniforms)
Shoes
put everything on the floor.
"if you don't find it now, it's automatically discarded"
downgrading clothes to "loungewear" is taboo, or it will never stop growing
Fold whenever possible
Fold mindfully
Fold so that they stand up vertically and you can see the edges
When you hang clothes
Organize by category
make an arrow rising to the right
Socks - look up her folding method, I'm sure it's on youtube
Seasonal Clothes
Don't store clothes in totes on the floor - things get stacked on totes, and totes never get used again. They just stay buried.
get drawers instead (the shelf with totes on it system Beka uses works well, too, and stops this potentiality)
Try to maintain as few "seasonal" clothes as possible
Books
Personally, this is my biggest area of disagreement. I like my books and plan to refer to them often. This may change, however, when I perfect my long-term book summary system.
Again, all books from everywhere on the floor and
touch
them (but do not read them)
Ruthlessly discard - only keep those that belong in the "hall of fame"
Papers
Rule of thumb: discard everything
*utilize solutions like Evernote and cloud storage - digital copies take up less space and are easier to search for later
Categories to (maybe) keep
In use
needed for limited time
keep indefinitely
*again, refer to existing systems
Papers needed for to-dos get scanned to Todoist
Papers possibly needed for reference get scanned to Evernote
Papers get ONE SPOT
hanging basket by door?
Troublesome Papers
Lecture Materials
Evernote
Evernote is again the answer to much of this
Komono - Misc. Items
Order:
CDs/DVDs/Etc
Skin care products
makeup
accessories
Valuables
Electrical equipment and related peripherals
Household equipment (stationary, sewing kits)
Kitchen goods / food supplies (kitchen stuff)
Other
If you have hobbies that have stuff, categorize them separately
Be ruthless!
Common Types
DisposablesQ
Dispose of
Gifts
The true purpose of a gift is
to be received
, not necessarily kept. If it does not bring joy now, it's purpose has passed
Electronics
Boxes go, CD's too - you can download manuals, instructions, drivers, etc.
cables to - buy new ones
obvious exception are proprietary cables that are difficult to locate
Broken things
throw them away - you're not going to fix them
Bedding
How many spare blankets does one really need?
Spare Buttons
discard - by the time buttons fall off, it is probably done anyway. If sure, sew into liner.
Fitness Gear
if not regularly used, dispose
Small Change
get it spent or converted - don't hoard it without purpose
Sentimental Items - LAST
Does it spark joy
right now
, or has it served it's purpose?
Disposing of these items helps you process the past
DO NOT FOIST THINGS OFF ON YOUR PARENTS OR YOU JUST GIVE THEM YOUR PROBLEMS!
Photos - LAST LAST
Digital storage (scan)
Reduce until something "clicks"
the "Goldilocks" zone of stuff to have
Storing your Things to Make Your Life Shine
Store vertically when possible
Make the top shelf your shrine
most drawers/storage can fit in a closet (things that sit on the floor)
Unpack and de-tag clothes as soon as you get home
Eliminate unwanted visual noise (tags, writing, signs) - even on the outside of storage materials
Round containers take up too much space
Shoe boxes are very versatile (as are their lids)
Keep storage simple (and storage systems)
Empty handbags every day (backpack?)
Each thing has a designated place
Discard first, store later
Consolidate each person's storage to one spot
Store bags in other bags
Keep things off the bath/sink
The Magic of Tidying Dramatically Transforms your Life
It enhances your decision-making
It puts you face-to-face with your past
Desire to keep things you don't really want stems from two places
The fear of the future
The fear of the past
Fewer things and a cleaner environment make people happier
Putting your house in order this way can make you more mindful of what is truly important to you
What you want to own is how you want to live your life
