Possible design Problems/solution and context analysis
Physical health issues
Back and neck issues
These issue could range from pains which could be due to strain and lack of support on the back and neck. This is a common issue which occurs when working hours at a desk sat down. Due to people being forced to work from home these issues will be more common due to there being a lack of proper work chairs.
Possible solution
Chair with adjustable lumbar and head support
Portable lumbar support which can just be attach to chair
Height adjustable desk to allow users to work standing
Chair with rollers to stimulate muscles in back reduce cramp
Wrist and arm issues
These issue can occur when working a desk using a key board and mouse, this usually occurs when doing a large amount of typing with no support or uncomfortable positioning of the keyboard and mouse
possible solutions
soft supportive keyboard and mouse pads
wearable wrist supports to reduce strain
Keyboard with built in rest to support wrists
storage and organization issues
due to the current pandemic people have been forced to work from home which means that there office is now at their house, this cause a problem because it means all the things they would normally keep organized at the office they have to keep at home which does not have enough storage and no way to organize it meaning this will impact their productivity
possible solutions
desk with built in easily orginaziable storage
filing cabinet with built in folders
attactable anywhere folder storage
space issues
due to the pandemic it has meant many people who live in large built up areas, especially in cities, have had to work in there apartments or small house which don't have a large amount of space normally which means they have been forced to work at a kitchen table or a worktop due to them not having enough space to accommodate a full sized desk
possible solutions
desk with retractable sides to make it more compact
desk and chair which can folded up to make some other type of thing, for example a work top or tv cable
wall mounted storage for files and folders
possible materials
when I am considering what materials I will need consider some very important areas for the product. firstly I will need to consider how durable the materials and weather they can with stand daily use or can be made more durable with surface finishes. Secondly I will need to consider cost because I will want this to be widely available to everyone so this means i want to make is not to priemen but not to cheap. Thirdly I want to make sure it will prove the right aesthetic design which is something which is very important
plywood which viner
aluminium
beach wood
steel
mdf
burch
acrylic
ergonomics
The ergonomics will be very dependent of the clients due to it being designed to there specific needs which makes it very important for me to consider when I am designing and making. The main things will need to focus on when design are, firstly size because the width and height of for example a desk will key to make a product that can be used comfortable by everyone, another thing would be the size of the space I am working with which I will be able to gain this information from my clients who will give me and idea of that. Secondly I will have to consider if the product is moveable who can make this easy and none straining on the person who has to considering every type of person. Thirdly product which are deigned for support need to either be adjustable or fit the majority and forget about top 95th and bottom 5th percentile to give a flexible size. To make sure that all of my ergonomics I will be gathering my own anthropometric data and second hand anthropometric data find the best size.
anthropometric data
anthropometric data is used as a data base where all human sizes and shapes are which are also used to calculate and a build to scale accurate human models. This is very important to me as a designer because it will allow me to be able to design a product which is the correct size for the client and any other user of the product because of the fact it has been designed to the correct size. I will also collect data for myself directly from my client because this is a prototype designed specifically for my client and there needs but if it was made for the mass market it would use date collected from a mass audience
existing products
Now a days there are many product out there which are designed to make working from home easier. Products like these can be bought from shops for an affordable price at places such as, Ikea and wayfair which can help amplify your ability to work. Although these shops do off good product for there price they do have to some corners to get to that price which often means less expensive and lower quality materials and finishes being uses and often means you have to assemble the products your self. This also can lead to less ability for inventive ways to make your work space cleaner. The products you are able to by are mainly flat packed desks and chair and accessories for your desk such as lamps, file holders, stationary tubs, letter trays, desk pads and many more items. What I plan to do for my product is create something which has the ability to incorporate all of them into one to allow my client to have a product which has lots of different functions and is a all in one kind of package taking inspirations from what is already on the market
Designs who have inspired me
I would say that my first designer who has inspired me is Charles Eames, the reason why I like his work so much is I think the way he is able to blend smooth and sculpted lines with the materials he uses. I find that the way he uses the materials to stretch and curve to make a design, which in a sense is like a flow of water just so beautiful. I am planning to try and design in the style of the artistic movement of Good design which founded by Eames and other designers in the 1930, because I just find it simply enjoyable to look. The second designer is Eileen Gray and this is simply because she was the pioneer of the modernist architecture move movement which is my all time favourite era of architecture so want to use this style in my work due to it being such an interesting way of designing.
