Identifying Needs in the Classroom - Coggle Diagram
Identifying Needs in the Classroom
Monitoring students in multiple ways, including disciplinary, social, performative and behavioral
Regular Journal Sheet Assessments with plenty of reflection
Daily smaller checks of noticing how students seem to be doing and nothing anything different/that stands out
Often unofficial steps are critical
Check-ins/one-on-ones with students during office hours to see how they are feeling about the learning in class and get more insight into their needs
Start of year Learning Center Check-ins and follow-ups
This should happen more often and perhaps more follow-up between learning center/parents/teachers need to be forced
Identify Struggling Student
Student performs badly regularly on particular tasks or flags one of the previous monitoring checks
Pull student aside and address issue/see how receptive they are to getting help
This may take multiple attempts/ often depends on how the student relationship is with the teacher.
Identify specific issue at hand
Teacher becomes aware of the particular need of the student or area of difficulty
Teacher speaks with the Learning Center to find available resources for that difficulty/need
It would be nice to build these resources
Teacher and student work together to pinpoint places the student is having issues and identify skills/technologies to assist
This can be a difficult part as we often assume that the student can pinpoint where something isn't working for them.
Student gets specific plan of action/study
With a specific diagnosis: Either the learning center has already created these, or works with the student and their parents to do so.
Without a specific diagnosis: The student and the learning center work to get a diagnosis and create strategies/use assistive technological interventions
The teacher and the student may meet for extra help
The teacher and the student may have specific additional requirements, such as seating chart, journal sheets, graphic organizers,
What else? Please comment in my discussion post!
Constant Monitoring and checking of all original factors mentioned to make sure that things are working and to make sure that no additional intervention is needed.
Return to any of the above steps as needed
