The available data does not allow conclusions to be drawn about one single, consistent mechanism of action of the various drugs administered to patients with
an altered state of consciousness. Each single molecule may act upon more than one mechanism and promote the transition toward higher levels of consciousness.
It appears that central nervous system depressants rather than stimulants may promote transitions from vegetative state and minimally conscious state to
recovery, while stimulants may be more apt at improving functional cognitive and behavioral recovery in patients presenting an appreciable level of consciousness.
