MANAGEMENT: Refer to endocrinologist - discuss urgency dependant on presenting symptoms and risk factors.

Risk factors: Female, Family history, FH of Grave's Disease, Smoking, Low iodine intake, Autoimmune disease.
CAUSES: Graves' disease which results in unregulated excessive production and secretion of thyroid hormone.
Toxic multi nodular goitre - occurs in thyroid gland with at least two autonomously functioning thyroid nodules that secrete excess thyroid hormone.

COMPLICATIONS: Graves' orbitopathy - sight threatening and can affect psychosocial wellbeing due to changes in appearance.
Thyrotoxic crisis - rare and life threatening. Can occur after a trigger such as acute infection, trauma, pregnancy, surgery or stroke.
Compression symptoms: a large goitre may cause dysphagia or breathlessness due to oesophageal or tracheal compression.

Investigations: check TFTs, if appears symptomatic but results normal, recheck in 6 months.
