Types of hard engineering that prevent flooding
Dams and reservoirs
Addvantages
Can produce electricty, by passing water through turbines
Can attract lots of tourists
Disaddvantage
Very expensive
Can trap sediement and deacrease amount of water
Habitates are flooded and can prevent the migration of fish
People will be relocated, away from the dam.
Channel Straightening and dredging
Addvantages
Speeds up the flow of water so the water is moved past into a difrent area.
Reduce risk of flooding in heavily urban areas
Disaddvanatage
Can flood other areas
Dredging needs to be done many times (removing sediemnt from the river bed.
This is where we cut through meanders to straighten the river
Embankemnts
This is a raised riverbank
Addvantages
Allows river to hold more water before flooding.
Disaddvantage
Looks unatrual, but not always only when usign concreate
Water could speed up and increase flood risk down stream
Flood relief channel
This is a man made river channel constructed to bypass urban areas.
addvantages
During times of high flow, sluece gates can be oppend to allow excess water flow away.
Disaddvanatage
Expensive
They can flood if river levels contuie to rise
